Canon Michael Downey's love of golf and his encouragement to other would-be golfers among the youth of the parish was reflected in the growing interest of many young men in this sport at that time. Now those young men are father and grandfathers and they, their children and grandchildren have continued to play golf. In recent years (recommencing in 2006) the annual golf tournament at Kilsyth Lennox Golf Club called ‘The Canon Michael Downey Memorial Tournament’ has been played once more in honour of his memory. This competition, open to all comers has attracted a large number of entrants and proved a great sucess in raising funds for the new St Patrick's Parish hall.
